Biggie’s Life Story Hits the Big Screen
By Stacy Gilliam
Posted July 22, 2005 -- Brooklyn-born crack dealer transforms himself into a hip-hop sensation and gains legions of fans, before he’s tragically gunned down in his prime. If it sounds like a good plot for a movie, you’re on the right track. No, this isn’t 50 Cent’s movie; it’s the true-life story of Chris Wallace, a.k.a. “Notorious B.I.G.” set to be featured on a big screen near you soon.
B.I.G.’s mother, Voletta Wallace, and his former managers, Wayne Barrow and Mark Pitts, will produce the film, while Fox Searchlight has writer Cheo Hodari Coker and director Antoine Fuqua (“Training Day”) in place to help bring the rapper’s tale to life. Coker was reportedly the last journalist to interview the 400-plus-pound star.

Sources say the biopic will begin from B.I.G.’s days as a dealer to his explosive rise as a chart-topping rapper and end with his death at age 24. In what many believe was part of a West Coast-East Coast battle, B.I.G. was shot leaving a Vibe party in Los Angeles in 1997.
The murder is still unsolved; however, a mistrial was declared earlier this month in a wrongful death lawsuit the family filed against the LAPD and the city of Los Angeles.
B.I.G.’s life is of interest to others in the film industry, too. HBO recently cast Sylvester Stallone to play LAPD homicide detective Russell Poole, who investigated Wallace’s murder just after his death, in an upcoming movie.
The question is: Which actor could beautifully capture Biggie? Can you think of any popular actors who might play the role of B.I.G.? Or do you think casting directors will have to hire an unknown?
